Today we received an email from the ATO regarding a scam involving AUSKEY’s. Auskey’s are used by many Australian businesses as a link to the ATO for lodging BAS and other sensitive business information.
The ATO have reported that thieves have been fraudulently obtaining AUSkeys linked to legitimate businesses and then using those Auskeys to lodge false BAS documents and change account details. Although the ATO has detected these and taken quick preventative action they are advising businesses to protect their online security and monitor activity on their accounts.
The ATO has advised to take the following action.
Take the following steps to protect your business and to ensure your identity has not been compromised:
- check access manager to understand who in your business has AUSkey access and that their level of access is appropriate to their role
- remove access for employees who no longer work for you
- check the financial institution and contact details you have recorded with us are correct.
